On Death

Writing has been a source of solace for me as I navigate through grief. Putting my emotions and thoughts down on paper allows me to process my feelings in a constructive way and provides me with a sense of release. In the poem below, I express my grief through these powerful words as I tackle the Ultimate Truth of life.

May you all be safe and blessed with goodness.

On Death

Endless as the ocean

And wide as the sea,

I am consumed with burdened emotion –

Trapped by what can’t be free,

With thoughts that swirl and twist inside,

Beautiful memories that I don’t want to hide,

Of beloved people who come and light our way,

Then suddenly, depart on a new path to sway!

We think we are masters of our fate,

As we chart our course and navigate,

But oh, how foolish and how fake,

When in a moment, all can break!

Death is the daunting truth – we all have to take!

It is the one that takes as far,

Leaving its door wide ajar!

It strikes at once,

Warning you with every pounce!

It shows pride in its power,

Stressing it every minute of the hour.

It brings heavy silence with it –

Pain, maybe anger, and agony of no limit!

It does not differ amongst the human race –

Black, white, poor, or rich – as it knows no face!

Then once we return to our mundane trek,

We humans tend to forget,

To cherish every moment, every speck,

Taking life for granted – such a regret!

Nonetheless, Death always descends with a mighty thud,

Its powerful weight engulfs us like a rising flood.

To remind us that it will always come our way,

With no invitation, or a warning, or even a say!

And when those we love are gone –

Only cherished memories help us to move along,

Leaving us with shattered thoughts

Yet with a faith ever so strong!

This is life with all its irony,

Its beauty, its harshness

Its bitterness and its sweetness –

Beating in our hearts ever so tirelessly!

In the end, acknowledgment is key,

And acceptance makes us kneel,

To what matters the most –

The Ultimate Truth, and to that I toast!
